Blue heaven little bluestem is a beautiful ornamental grass. During the summer, it grows as a mound of slightly arching blue-green leaves tinged with burgundy.
In late summer, it grows small, white fluffy seedheads. In fall, its leaves turn a stunning burgundy-red with purple highlights.
Horticulturists from the University of Minnesota introduced this cold-hardy plant to the nursery trade. It may be difficult to find for sale, but is worth asking your local nursery if they carry this cultivar.
Blue heaven little bluestem is a beautiful ornamental grass at the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden. This cultivar has a deep, rich, reddish-purple fall color. It is also more upright and less floppy than other cultivars of little bluestem. It's a very good choice for low-water planting beds as well as mass plantings.
Summer growth can be left standing for winter interest, if desired. Cut stems and leaves to ground level before new growth begins in spring.
