Daylily is one of the easiest perennial flowers to grow in the Colorado Springs area. There are many cultivars available. They grow as large clumps of arching, sword-like leaves.

From July through August, the trumpet-shaped flowers appear. The flowers vary in size and color depending on the cultivar. Flowers tend to be short-lived, usually lasting only a day. Some cultivars have been bred to bloom repeatedly through the growing season.

Daylilies grow best with moderate moisture. If the location is too dry, they will be small and flower less than normal.

Daylilies grow well at the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden, provided they get sufficient moisture. They are very easy to care for and have nice flowers.

When all flowering is finished on a stalk, trim it below the tips of the leaves so it is not visible. Daylily leaves dieback with frost in the fall. Trim the leaves to ground level in fall.
